Trainer Shelley Deveau Makes History with Golden Tempo’s Belmont Stakes Win
Trainer Shelley Deveau has etched her name in history once again, as Golden Tempo triumphed in the Belmont Stakes this past Saturday, just a month after securing victory at the Kentucky Derby.
Deveau made headlines as the first female trainer to win the coveted Derby at Churchill Downs, and now she stands as the first woman to achieve multiple wins in Triple Crown races. Remarkably, she’s only the second woman to celebrate a Belmont Stakes win in the past four years.
“Golden Tempo is amazing. Jose is amazing,” Deveau expressed on Fox when reflecting on the historic win. “It’s an incredible feeling, really incredible. I’m not sure, maybe I should name the horse ‘Amazing’ now,” she added with a chuckle.
This latest victory took place at Saratoga Springs, where Golden Tempo outperformed both Commandment and Renegade, the latter being the race favorite. The racetrack is currently under renovations and is set to reopen next year.
Deveau, a local from Saratoga Springs, shared her thoughts after Golden Tempo’s Derby win, stating, “I’m thrilled to represent all women everywhere. I believe I can do anything I set my mind to.”
On Saturday, she celebrated alongside Jenna Antonucci, the trainer of Arcangelo in 2023, marking their place as the first women to win the Belmont Stakes with their families present.
“This means so much because it shows our town can host this event, and we can celebrate this moment together,” Deveau remarked, highlighting the significance of the occasion.
The lingering question after the race, of course, is what might have transpired had Golden Tempo participated in the Preakness Stakes. Speculations abound regarding the possibility of clinching the Triple Crown.
Originally, Deveau Racing cited health concerns and Golden Tempo’s long-term future as reasons for opting out of the Preakness. Now, with the spotlight shining on another remarkable achievement in horse racing, Deveau reiterated her stance.
When asked about the potential Triple Crown journey, she responded, “I’m not going to dwell on that. We made our decision, and today he won. That’s what we should focus on.”
