Cherished Democratic official dies after fighting illness

Jerry Connolly, Virginia Democrat, Passes Away at 75

Virginia Democrat Jerry Connolly died on Wednesday at the age of 75, according to a statement from his family.

Connolly, whose career in public service spanned decades, passed away peacefully at his home in Virginia, surrounded by loved ones. He had significant experience on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, having served there for 14 years, and spent 17 years in the Legislature.

“We were fortunate enough to share Jerry with Northern Virginia for nearly 40 years, because that was his joy, his purpose, and his passion,” his family shared.

“Jerry dedicated his life to improving the community,” they continued. “He focused on helping the underprivileged and always aimed to do what was right. He was a talented politician, a visionary leader on the Fairfax County Board, an environmental advocate, and a strong supporter of democracy.”

Connolly’s legacy is very much intertwined with Northern Virginia. His influence can still be felt in projects across the region. For example, the Silverline, the Oakton Library, the Mosaic District, and the Cross County Trail are all part of his contributions.

Last month, Connolly announced his resignation from the House Oversight Committee after his cancer returned. Notably, he secured election in December against New York Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez despite his health struggles.

Democrats and Republicans alike expressed their sorrow over Connolly’s passing, reflecting on friendships shared across party lines.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of ranking member Jerry Connolly,” said House Observatory Chairman James Kommer (R-KY) in a statement. “He represented Virginia’s 11th Congressional District with honor and integrity. We grieve his loss and stand with his family during this challenging time.”

“His absence will leave a hole in our hearts,” his family said, “but we are proud that his life’s work will endure for future generations.”
