Cherished janitor becomes emotional after receiving an unexpected recognition for 39 years of service: 'I can’t speak'

A highly regarded former janitor from Texas, who dedicated nearly 40 years to cleaning classrooms and supporting students, was overwhelmed with emotion after receiving a surprise recognition from the school district.

Marilyn Hampton retired in 2022 after serving as a custodian for 39 years with the Aubrey Independent School District. After her retirement, she continued her work with infants and toddlers at the Early Bird Learning Center within the same district.

During a recent school board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Shannon Saylor approached Hampton and requested her assistance with a special task.

Saylor asked her to roll out a red carpet at the front of the podium. Hampton, now 76, unfurled the carpet without initially noticing its message, which revealed: “Marilyn Hampton Elementary School.”

When Saylor announced that a new school would bear her name, Hampton was filled with tears and said, “You’re too good. I wasn’t expecting this. Thank y’all. I can’t speak,” as reported by a media outlet.

She further exclaimed, “Oh my goodness. Oh God. You all are the best,” expressing her joy. To the amusement of those present, Hampton noted, “I didn’t bring my phone.” Saylor responded, “That’s OK, it’ll be everywhere.”

Saylor emphasized that Hampton is an integral part of the Aubrey ISD community, declaring her a teacher in every meaningful sense despite not holding an official educational title. “Her legacy of kindness and hard work will be remembered,” Saylor stated.

The surprise announcement, according to the school board, was intended to publicly acknowledge Hampton’s enduring influence on students’ lives.

On Friday, Hampton shared her disbelief, saying, “I still can’t believe it. I haven’t stopped crying,” after being honored with a T-shirt featuring the school’s name.

She reflected, “Can you believe it? I can’t. All I can say is God is good,” while expressing her joy and gratitude.

Hampton once felt inadequate for not having attended college, but realized that her role as a custodian provided her with fulfillment. “I thought, ‘You know, Marilyn? God put you where you are supposed to be.’ And I’m very happy with the way things turned out,” she explained.

Throughout her tenure, she not only maintained the school but also purchased supplies and provided tutoring to struggling students. “When I could help a kid and turn their smile up instead of down, that’s what I wanted to do,” she shared.

In disbelief, she stated, “Whoever thought a janitor would have a school named after them?” She added, “My goodness. What an honor. It’s something I never thought I’d see in my lifetime,” as she expressed her heartfelt appreciation.

The Marilyn Hampton Elementary School, located in Aubrey, Texas, is scheduled to open in August 2027.
