Teacher Dies from Flu Complications at Cobb County School

KENNESAW, Ga. — A private Christian school in Cobb County is grieving the loss of a beloved teacher who passed away due to complications from the flu.

Angela Coleman, who taught Spanish at Mount Paran Christian School in Kennesaw, has left a significant impact on her students and colleagues. In response to her passing, the high school was closed on Friday, allowing everyone to take a moment to process the heartbreaking news.

Matthew Kerlin, the Head of Mount Paran Christian School, expressed his wish to honor Coleman’s legacy. “I would love to have an entire workforce of people who had her energy and passion and commitment,” he shared.

Coleman’s warmth and infectious smile will be remembered fondly by those she touched. She had been a part of the school community for nearly 15 years, with her upcoming birthday and the anniversary of her time there both serving as poignant reminders of her contributions.

Kerlin remarked on Coleman’s vibrant personality, noting she was always bright and energetic. He added that earlier that day, a group of students met for prayer, supported by faculty, as they faced this collective loss. “We wanted to give them space to grieve,” he said, mentioning the availability of counselors on campus to aid students in coping.

In her role, Coleman was not only the World Language chair but also served as an instructional coach and faculty lead for the Student Government Association. She had dedicated over a decade to guiding students in servant-leadership.

Her initiatives included the founding of the HOPE club, offering support to students dealing with grief or serious illness. Coleman was recognized as one of Cobb County’s best teachers in 2023 and had recently completed her master’s degree in School Leadership from Baylor University.

Kerlin reflected on the influence of Coleman’s faith in her interactions with others. “Her love for Christ and the way that influenced her relationships with people is something that they will always remember,” he said, addressing his heartache for the community as they cope with the loss. He also noted her family; Coleman is survived by her husband and two children, one of whom is an alumnus of Mt. Paran and the other still attending.

Following her passing, many individuals have shared their cherished memories of Coleman on social media. Kerlin expressed gratitude for the sense of community during such a tough time, stating, “I can’t imagine getting through this without having a community of people to grieve with. But, I also can’t imagine grieving without the hope we have in Christ, knowing she’s in a better place and we will see her again.”
