Minneapolis Lynx Coach Critiques Emma Meesman’s Choice

Recently, Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve had a forthright response to Emma Meesman’s decision to join a different team. After practice on Tuesday, Reeve didn’t hold back, stating simply, “She made the wrong choice.”

The Lynx, along with the Liberty and Mercury, were the last three teams vying for Meesman’s services earlier this month. Minnesota’s associate coach, Eric Thibaut, who has a history with Meesman from his time with the Mystics, spearheaded their attempts to secure the talented free agent.

In the end, Meesman opted for freedom. However, she has yet to officially sign as her visa application process is still in progress, leaving some uncertainty about when she will join her new team.

Liberty general manager Jonathan Kolb wasn’t eager to delve into the specifics of Meesman’s decision to return to the WNBA after a two-and-a-half-year break during a recent shootaround. But he did emphasize that Meesman has a clear goal: “From my perspective, she wants to win. Winning the championship is her top priority.”

Mercury coach Nate Tibbets stood behind Meesman’s choice when asked about her commitment to New York earlier this month. “Emma is a great player. She’ll fit in well here,” Tibbets remarked before his team’s game against Brooklyn. He acknowledged that there were several teams vying for her and expressed his belief that she made a wise decision. Meesman is familiar with Sandy Brondello, and of course, she’ll reunite with Breanna Stewart, both of whom she’s played alongside.

Reeve, in her typical straightforward manner, had a more pointed take on the situation. She emphasized that Meesman’s choice seemed like a mistake.

The Lynx and Liberty, the top two teams in the league this season, will play their first match on Wednesday since New York defeated Minnesota to clinch the 2024 WNBA championship. Over the next three weeks, they are set to face off in four games.
