Canadian Brooke Henderson entered Saturday’s third round of the Chevron Championship with a seven-stroke lead, but easily erased that lead thanks to a historic 8-under 64.
The first birdie of the day came on the par-5 4th, but the round entered unusual territory from the par-3 7th.
Henderson got a birdie there and then an eagle on the par-5 eighth. Over the next six holes, the Canadian made five more birdies, and as he stood on the 15th tee, suddenly… held the lead alone At 11 under.
“I’ve been hitting really well this past week,” Henderson said Saturday night.
“I didn’t take advantage of some opportunities. I was really consistent and played really solid. I was able to make a few putts today. Clutch par save on the 6th, birdie on the 7th, Then I hit a long one for eagle on the 8th, so I felt a lot of momentum in my putter and was able to stay pretty hot throughout the back nine.”
Play was suspended due to inclement weather, forcing the field to finish the round on Sunday morning. Henderson was standing on the 18th tee when the siren sounded.
“[On Saturday] At night, it was a little difficult trying to stay in the moment, not knowing if I had to play last night or leave early this morning. It’s always a little bit difficult when you’re delayed because of the rain,” Henderson added on Sunday morning.
“But I wish I could have played the 18th hole.” [on Saturday] I was a little carried away and you never know what’s going to happen. At that time, I was grateful for a little break. It depends. However, No. 18 played much more difficult this morning. I got a par, so I’m hoping to get two birdies early in the final round. ”
When Henderson putted out early Sunday morning on the 18th, she left the golf course with a sub-64 or better, the 10th round in Chevron Championship history. However, it was the lowest 18-hole score at the club since the tournament moved to Carleton Woods in 2023.
“There’s a lot of history in this championship,” Henderson said.
“It’s always so great to be a part of that history. I’m excited about yesterday’s round. It was a lot of fun. Great momentum, great confidence. Hopefully we can carry it forward.”
Henderson will join Nelly Korda and Helan Liu in the final bracket on Sunday at 12:36pm ET.
Korda is seeking his fifth straight start win on the LPGA Tour, becoming only the third player to accomplish this feat. Nancy Lopez won her 1978, and Annika Sorenstam won her 5 straight in a span spanning both her 2004 and 2005 seasons. If he wins, Korda will also be given his second major title.
Henderson and Korda both enter the final round at 10 under, while Ryu is one stroke higher at 11 under thanks to a birdie on the final hole.
