Chicago alderman criticizes mayor for police inaction regarding federal agents

Chicago Officials Clash Over Police Response to Immigration Enforcement

In Chicago, tensions are rising as the mayor and former police officers publicly criticize the city’s handling of police involvement with federal immigration agents. This fallout follows reports that the police department has been instructed not to assist Border Patrol agents during a recent incident involving protests.

Anthony Napolitano, a Chicago Republican Alderman and former police officer, emphasized the importance of police responding when help is requested. “When someone calls for assistance, our officers should go, no exceptions,” Napolitano stated, referring to a lack of directive from top officials that he believes would have allowed officers to assist federal agents.

This controversy was ignited when the police patrol chief supposedly issued a standdown order after Border Patrol agents requested support over the weekend. Napolitano characterized this order as “unprecedented,” holding Mayor Brandon Johnson accountable for what he sees as politically driven interference in police operations.

“This is pure politics dictating our police work,” he asserted. Many at City Hall feel similarly, though they might not express it openly. According to Napolitano, the mayor’s actions are sowing chaos, undermining public safety for political gain. “Officers take an oath to the Constitution, not to the mayor,” he added.

Chicago has been a focal point in national discussions about immigration as ICE initiated Operation Midway Blitz. This operation is reportedly aimed at targeting undocumented individuals involved in criminal activities in the area, raising concerns about the city’s sanctuary policies, which Napolitano argues enable crime.

In response, both Governor J.B. Pritzker and Mayor Johnson have described the federal operations as threats to democratic values, pushing back against efforts to deploy federal resources to arrest undocumented immigrants.

Napolitano expressed that Chicago residents desire “more police” and support efforts to remove illegal immigrants. He conveyed that citizens want federal officials to take action against those who should not be in the country. “They’re looking for federal agents to clean up our streets,” he stated, referring to rising gang violence and illegal activities.

The Chicago Police Department released a statement clarifying that while federal authorities were managing a specific incident, officers were present to ensure safety and control the scene. They clarified that during situations involving immigration enforcement, actions would be decided according to urban law.

However, some within the police department refuted this narrative, accusing leadership of covering up their inaction. Allegations surfaced that one driver involved in a recent incident was armed, further complicating the situation.

Looking at the mayor’s decisions, Napolitano suggested they might stem from poor poll numbers. “It seems like there’s an urgency to push his agenda while facing potential electoral defeat,” he observed.
