A Chicago city councilwoman has announced that she will no longer post crime alerts on social media or send alerts to constituents unless they explicitly opt-in to the notifications, citing over-reporting of crimes leading to inaccurate public perceptions.
The announcement by Councillor Reni Manaa Hoppenworth came as burglary and sexual offences have reached their highest levels in years, with theft and robbery also on the rise.
Councilwoman Manna Hoppenworth, who represents New York City’s 48th District, said in a blog post that only newsletter subscribers who have opted in to receive crime alerts will receive the alerts.
She said the decision was based on community feedback and a “commitment to our values of empowerment, anti-racism and community.”
