Lopez Critiques Chicago Leadership on Crime Issues
Chicago Democrat Raymond Lopez has voiced strong criticism of Governor J.B. Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson, accusing them of downplaying significant crime issues while alienating other Democrats by shifting focus away from law enforcement. During an appearance on “Fox & Friends,” Lopez stated, “History will prove Democrats wrong.” He added that, surprisingly, only a few in his party are opposing the push to shift policies further to the left.
Lopez, who has been representing Chicago’s 15th Ward since 2015, expressed concerns that electing more extreme politicians—like Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani—will harm the party’s reputation. “To remain relevant, we need to move back to the center,” he asserted. His comments arise amid ongoing discussions about the Trump administration possibly broadening crime interventions in deep blue cities like Chicago.
Both Pritzker and Johnson have been clear that they are against the idea of bringing in federal support, like the National Guard, which many see as unnecessary. In their defense of Chicago’s crime statistics, the mayor has mentioned a reported decline in crime rates, including a notable drop in homicides over recent years.
However, Lopez acknowledges that while some statistics improve, there are still troubling numbers. He pointed out that no level of gun violence or loss of life can be deemed acceptable. “Every day we’ve seen individuals fall victim in Chicago,” he remarked, expressing frustration with the leadership’s dismissive attitude toward ongoing issues. “It’s not okay to say everything is fine when it’s clearly not.”
