Chicago Pastor on a Mission to Inspire Youth
Known for his unique outreach efforts, a Chicago pastor is gearing up for an extraordinary journey to connect with young people across the nation. Pastor Corey Brooks, often referred to as the “Rooftop Pastor,” plans to walk 3,000 miles this September from New York to Los Angeles. His objective is to raise awareness and funds for community development in Chicago, particularly aimed at underserved youth.
“Our nation is distant from God, our families and communities are too, and we’re in need of a spiritual revival in America,” Brooks shared during an interview. “That’s why I walk—to bring hope to people, whether they’re in cities, suburbs, or rural areas, and to show them that change is possible.”
Reflecting on Past Efforts
Back in 2011, Brooks captured national attention when he camped on the roof of a decrepit motel in Chicago for 94 days. His protest highlighted violence and youth deaths in his community while raising funds to demolish the abandoned building.
The protest’s success led to the establishment of Project Hood, a nonprofit aimed at assisting at-risk youth in breaking free from the cycles of poverty and violence. According to its website, Project Hood offers guidance, training, and community support to local residents.
“Chicago was once recognized as one of the most dangerous places in America, but we worked to change that,” Brooks noted.
New Initiatives and Goals
Brooks’ new initiative, dubbed “Walking around America,” aims to expand his efforts to even more young people. His target is to raise $25 million in private donations to support the development of 90,000-square-foot leadership and economic opportunity centers under Project Hood. He envisions spreading the organization’s impact nationwide.
“We’ll be introducing schools through these centers, and our aim is to plant Project Hood everywhere,” Brooks explained. “This walk isn’t just about raising funds; it’s also about enhancing the benefits for our communities.”
Support for his endeavor has already begun pouring in from community members, business leaders, and various donors, he highlighted.
“We’re in the process of building this 90,000-square-foot center. It’s going to be transformative for America,” he said. “I hope my journey inspires others to realize that faith and hard work can lead to significant achievements.”
“I truly believe America still has a vibrant spirit,” he concluded. “When faith, hard work, and vision come together, everything is possible in this country.”
