A Chicago police officer was shot and killed early Sunday morning on the city’s southwest side while walking home from work, the department said.
Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office identified the officer as 30-year-old Luis Huesca. Police Chief Larry Snelling said Huesca was shot multiple times as he was driving home around 3 a.m. Sunday.
Huesca was still in uniform but covered with other clothing, which Snelling said is normal for off-duty officers. The injured officer was taken to a Chicago hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
No suspects were in custody as of Sunday evening, and police had not yet determined a motive for the shooting.

At 2:53 a.m., Huesca was dispatched to the scene after ShotSpotter alerted officers to multiple gunshots near 55th Street and Kedzie Street, according to a CPD statement. After “circling the area,” he was found outside in the 3100 block of West 56th Street.
Huesca’s car was taken in the incident, but police have not confirmed whether the shooting was part of a carjacking, saying the investigation is in its preliminary stages.
“These officers were victims of the types of crimes they were working to keep the people of this city safe,” Snelling said. “Another sad day for the Chicago Police Department.”

Johnson said he met with Huesca’s family Sunday morning.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Officer Luis M. Huesca of the 5th Precinct/Priority Response Team following an unconscionable act of gun violence in our city. No one should have to suffer such pain,” the mayor said in a statement. statement.
“Our city is saddened and our condolences go out to Lewis’s fellow officers and the community, as well as their entire families,” Johnson added.
