Latest Bedbug Report Reveals City Rankings

Urban life often comes with expectations of busy streets and crowded sidewalks, but pests aren’t usually front of mind for most people. Orkin has released its latest report highlighting the cities experiencing significant bedbug infestations.

This survey draws data from both residential and commercial treatments in metropolitan areas, covering the period from May 15, 2024, to May 14, 2025.

Understanding the Threat

Ben Hottel, an entomologist from Orkin based in Atlanta, emphasized the importance of knowing how to identify, prevent, and manage these pests. “Bed bugs are among the hardest pests to eliminate, especially when they invade homes or hotels,” he noted.

The bedbug, measuring only about 3/16 inches in length, seems to prefer humans over pets. They’re particularly adept at hitching rides on personal items like luggage and wallets, making their spread quite insidious.

Chicago Maintains Its Position

For five years running, Chicago has claimed the top spot for the most bedbug infestations. Following closely behind are Cleveland, Ohio, and Detroit, Michigan. Los Angeles, California, is ranked third, with Indianapolis, Indiana, rounding out the top four.

Interestingly, Hartford, Connecticut, made an impressive leap of 48 spots, landing at number 35. On the other end of the spectrum, Houston, Texas, appears to be the least affected city among the top 50.

Tips for Prevention

Orkin provides some strategies for keeping bedbugs at bay:

  • Look for small, flat, oval-shaped insects that are brown and about the size of an apple seed, as well as signs of an infestation.
  • Check sheets, curtains, and cushions for any evidence of bedbugs.
  • Store luggage on racks, keeping it away from beds and furniture.
  • Upon returning home, carefully inspect your belongings, and consider putting your clothes in the dryer for 30-45 minutes on a high heat setting.

These proactive measures can help mitigate the chances of bringing unwanted guests into your home. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to dealing with bedbugs.
