Chicago Rapist Kidnaps, Robs Nurse at Knifepoint

A Chicago man with a long history of violent crime and a convicted rapist is accused of kidnapping a nurse at knifepoint in a hospital parking lot and robbing her of jewelry and valuables.

Michael Perkins, 62, is accused of approaching a 43-year-old female nurse outside Ascension St. Mary's Hospital in Ukrainian Village in New York City at approximately 7:15 a.m. on July 27. CWB Chicago Reported.

The sex offender, who was convicted of raping a 14-year-old girl when he was 19, allegedly threatened the woman with a knife, then stole three rings worth $5,000 and forced her to take him to a nearby Chase Bank.

As she was driving, Perkins threatened her and warned her that he knew where she worked, police said.

Eventually, the bank was closed, so prosecutors said the gunman forced the victim back into his car and drove him to an ATM, where he withdrew $400 in cash.

After taking the cash, Perkins allegedly drove the woman to an alley, where he got out of the car and attempted to use the woman's credit card at a McDonald's in Lincoln Park.

Investigators said the suspect then sold the nurse's ring to a jewelry store in Hermosa.

Perkins was arrested Monday when he went to register for his court-mandated weekly sex offender registration and was charged with two counts of kidnapping and armed robbery, CWB Chicago reported.

According to court records obtained by the outlet, he was convicted of eight counts of robbery and escape in 1994 and was also charged with attempted murder, but that charge was ultimately dropped. He was also convicted of possession of a stolen vehicle in 2019, but did not serve his full six-year sentence.

Judge Antara Rivera ordered Perkins to remain in jail until the end of his trial.
