Scott Peterson returns to court to fight murder conviction
Criminal defense attorney Mark Geragos now says his former client is innocent of killing his pregnant wife as Peterson seeks a new trial and debates the sentencing of “The Last” Armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed. But he said he believed it.
A Chicago woman was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the 2019 murder of a nine-month pregnant woman whose baby was cut from her womb.
Clarissa Figueroa changed her plea to guilty to first-degree murder on Tuesday.
The 50-year sentence comes five years after he was accused of killing 19-year-old Maren Ochoa Lopez on April 23, 2019, and cutting the baby from the woman’s womb.
Cook County Judge Peggy Ciampas asked whether Mr. Figueroa understood that he must serve 100% of that term and would not be eligible for early release.

“Yes,” Figueroa replied.
Figueroa’s guilty plea came after his daughter, Desiree Figueroa, admitted helping her mother in an elaborate murder plot.
Desiree agreed to testify against her mother and was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
Authorities said the plot began after Figueroa’s adult son died of natural causes and the woman began a frantic search for her newborn.
Authorities say she posted ultrasound photos and photos of a room decorated for the baby on her Facebook page.
In March 2019, she and Ochoa-Lopez connected on a Facebook page for pregnant women. Ms. Figueroa allegedly lied to Ms. Ochoa-Lopez that she was pregnant.

The mother-daughter duo allegedly lured the 19-year-old victim to their Chicago home with the promise of free baby clothes after posting the following: Advertising on Facebook.

“She was giving away clothes, probably on the pretext that she was giving clothes to her daughters and that she had extra clothes for boys,” said family spokeswoman Cicilia Garcia.

Police previously said Clarisa Figueroa used a coaxial cable to strangle Ochoa-Lopez and then cut the baby from her womb.
Desiree Figueroa admitted that she gave the mother the knife that was used to cut the baby from the womb.

Detectives investigating Ochoa-Lopez’s disappearance discovered that she had gone to the Figueroas’ home.
After finding Ochoa-Lopez’s car near Figueroa’s home, police found her body in a trash can outside the home.
Figueroa then called 911 and lied, saying she had given birth but the baby was not breathing.
When the boy was taken to the hospital by paramedics, nurses became suspicious and the boy underwent a DNA test.
Tests revealed that the baby belonged to Ochoa-Lopez and her husband. Baby Yovany Jadiel Lopez died a few months later in June 2019.

Police and prosecutors say Clarisa Figueroa tricked her boyfriend, Piotr Bobak, into believing she was the father.

Bobak cleaned up the crime scene, pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and was sentenced to four years in prison. He was released on parole last year.
