A survey of mayors of the nation’s declining sanctuary cities has ranked Chicago’s Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson among the top 10 worst mayors.
of investigationThe report, released by the Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI), looked at how the nation’s mayors fund immigration, their collaboration with federal law enforcement, and their interest in immigration law.

IRLI’s rankings rank Chicago as the third-worst sanctuary city for 2022. “Under Johnson’s leadership, the city’s illegal immigration problem has worsened, leading to worsening crime, overcrowding, and civil unrest,” the group wrote.
“Sanctuary policies are one of the largest magnets for illegal immigrants to come to this country, and sanctuary mayors are vocal supporters of these policies,” said Dale L. Wilcox, executive director and general counsel of IRLI. “While these mayors claim to be more compassionate than their critics, in reality their policies are causing unacceptable levels of overcrowding, crime and death in their communities.”
“Immigration enforcement officers’ job is to remove dangerous aliens and keep communities safe,” added Tom Homan, IRLI senior fellow and former acting director of ICE. “Sanctuary cities and their policies prevent ICE from doing its job, and innocent people are dying as a result. The lawlessness of sanctuary cities and their mayors is destroying some of our nation’s greatest cities, and it must stop.”

Johnson has implemented a number of policies that favor illegal immigrants, announced his support for granting voting rights to illegal immigrants, spent millions of taxpayer dollars to set up shelters for illegal immigrants, and diverted resources and support from Chicago residents to caring for illegal immigrants, growing anger among Chicago voters over his obsession with caring for immigrants.
Johnson also tried to shift the blame for the migrant crisis from himself and Joe Biden to Texas’ Republican governor, Greg Abbott, who Sent Since 2022, about 37,000 illegal immigrants have flowed into Chicago.

“Despite his attacks on Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Johnson continues to push for sanctuary policies with all his might,” the group said in the report. “Johnson Spend hundreds Johnson spent millions of taxpayer dollars caring for illegal immigrants, even as many of his own citizens lived in poverty. He even tried to build a shelter for 900 illegal immigrants on the city’s south side, even though tens of thousands of Chicago residents lived in poverty. Remaining “Homeless.”
In second place was New York Governor Eric Adams, whose city IRLI calls “America’s most dangerous sanctuary city.”
The remaining three in the top 10 worst features are Michael Johnston of Denver, followed by Kelly Gertz of Athens, Georgia, Muriel Bowser of Washington, D.C., Karen Bass of Los Angeles, Mary Ann Baldwin of Raleigh, North Carolina, Reed Gusciora of Trenton, New Jersey, Ron Nirenberg of San Antonio, Texas, and Darrell Steinberg of Sacramento, Calif. All are Democrats except for Nirenberg, who lists as an independent.
