A recent report from the Metropolitan Mayors Association highlights that Chicago has recorded more murders this year than all major cities in pro-gun control Florida combined.
According to the report released on August 5, 2026, Chicago has seen 211 murders this year.
In comparison, Florida’s main cities—Miami, Orlando, and Tampa—reported a total of just 29 homicides during the same timeframe.
Specifically, the breakdown is 8 murders in Miami, 10 in Orlando, and 11 in Tampa.
Additionally, Chicago outpaced Florida’s cities in terms of robberies, with 2,168 incidents compared to Miami, Orlando, and Tampa’s 385 combined.
Governor Ron DeSantis (Republican) commented on X, stating, “Florida’s crime rate is the lowest it has been in 50 years. When you enact law and order policies and support law enforcement, the bad guys end up paying the price.”
Moreover, Florida has recently implemented constitutional enforcement, signed into law by Mr. DeSantis on April 3, 2023, making it the 26th constitutional carry state in the country.
In stark contrast, Chicago, along with the entire state of Illinois, mandates that law-abiding citizens acquire a Firearm Owner Identification Card (FOID) just to possess a firearm for home protection. To carry a gun for self-defense, an additional concealed carry permit is necessary. There are also waiting periods of 72 hours for purchasing firearms, various red flag laws, and restrictions on certain types of firearms, including a ban on “assault weapons” and “high-capacity” magazines, alongside other regulations concerning gun storage and modifications.
Chicago’s regulations, compounded by those in Cook County, lead to even stricter Second Amendment controls than are found in the rest of Illinois.
