Chick-fil-A Holds the Top Spot Among U.S. Restaurants for 11 Consecutive Years Despite Closing on Sundays

A restaurant, known for its welcoming service and a mission to “praise God,” remains closed on Sundays. Chick-fil-A has recently been recognized as the top quick-service restaurant on the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), achieving a score of 83 for the 11th consecutive year. Other well-known chains like Panda Express and Starbucks placed in a tie for fourth, with average ratings around 80, while Panera, Papa John’s, and Pizza Hut scored 79. Meanwhile, Culver’s, Domino’s, and Dunkin’ shared an 78 score, with McDonald’s trailing at 70.

Chick-fil-A occupies a distinctive position within the fast food industry, largely due to its strong corporate culture. The chain was founded by a Christian businessman who stated that the company’s goal is to “praise God by being faithful stewards” and to positively impact everyone who interacts with the brand.

While the restaurant closes one day a week, customers are still eager to visit throughout the other six days, drawn by its distinctive hospitality and the familiar phrase “my pleasure.” The restaurant’s commitment to traditional values seems to resonate well with its patrons.

The company’s website mentions that its founder, S. Truett Cathy, made the decision to close on Sundays back in 1946, a practice still upheld today. It’s a choice that reflects the brand’s core principles.

Current ACSI research reveals that the restaurant industry faces challenges, struggling to maintain customer loyalty amid rising operational costs. In fact, Chick-fil-A recorded a growth rate in 2024 that was the slowest in two decades, with only a 5.4% increase. Families are increasingly viewing dining out as a luxury.

According to Forest Morgeson, an associate marketing professor at Michigan State University and director of research at ACSI, successful brands adapt quickly to changing tastes while maintaining consistency. He points to smaller emerging chains like Raising Cane’s and Wingstop, which leverage creative marketing and digital engagement to compete effectively with well-established brands.
