Chick-fil-A is one of the hardest franchises to join in America, and the initial investment might surprise you.

Chick-fil-A is known as one of the most challenging franchises to join, drawing thousands of eager applicants annually for a limited number of owner-operator roles.

This distinctive business model was brought to light by Julian Good, who runs a Chick-fil-A location in St. Charles, Illinois, during a recent episode of the “Founder Talk” podcast.

He shared, “The franchise fee is $10,000, and it’s been the same for the last 50 years.”

Good mentioned that around 100,000 people apply every year to become a Chick-fil-A owner-operator, but only about 200 are chosen in the end. Those lacking prior Chick-fil-A experience may wait three to five years for a chance, he added.

Chick-fil-A labels its selection process as extremely competitive, stating it seeks leaders ready to commit fully to managing a restaurant, based on its January 2024 press release.

Interestingly, prior experience with the chain isn’t mandatory.

According to Chick-fil-A, more than a quarter of newly appointed owner-operators had never worked at one of its locations or even for the company before their application.

The company also noted that these operators come from diverse professional backgrounds such as manufacturing, healthcare, education, law enforcement, and retail.

In contrast to many other franchise systems, owner-operators at Chick-fil-A do not own their restaurants. Chick-fil-A itself maintains ownership of the restaurant, its equipment, and often the real estate as well, meaning operators don’t build equity in the business nor can they sell it upon retirement.

Good pointed out that this is a significant distinction between Chick-fil-A and various competing franchise models.

He elaborated, “When a Chick-fil-A operator retires, it doesn’t get handed down to their kids. You don’t sell the business or anything. It simply returns to Chick-fil-A.”

Moreover, Chick-fil-A’s unique operational strategy is reflected in its schedule, with all outlets closed on Sundays.

This weekly closure is a cherished tradition, Good emphasized, adding, “Just a way to glorify God and give back to the team and the community.”

Chick-fil-A was approached for further comments.
