A Mexican senator from the Morena party has drawn widespread condemnation for organizing the ritual killing of chickens as an “offering to the rain god.” The incident took place in one of the courtyards of the Mexican Federal Senate.
The ceremony took place this week when Mexican Sen. Alfredo Gómez Hernandez had a group of indigenous people set up a series of offerings to Tlaloc, the rain god.
Several people videotaped the ceremony and shared it on social media, condemning the practice.

During the ceremony, a man held the chicken’s head while a woman wearing indigenous costume cut it off with a knife. A decapitated chicken bleeds as a third man dances around shaking a vase of embers and spices. It remains unclear how the group got past the security guard and brought the knife.
In the aftermath of this ritual, the Mexican Senate issued a formal statement distancing itself from the incident and claiming that it was carried out solely by Gómez Hernández and not on behalf of the organization.

Asked about it, Gomez Hernandez said the ceremony is protected speech under the uses and customs section of the Mexican constitution. He warned that people needed to be respectful.

The incident sparked widespread controversy over religious differences. Earlier this week, the Morena party posted on social media a photo of a T-shirt with an image of the Holy Death and a message promoting current president Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
