Chiefs fall to 0-2 for the first time since 2014 after losing to the Eagles

Kansas City Chiefs Start Season 0-2

For the first time since 2014, the Kansas City Chiefs have begun the NFL season with an 0-2 record, losing to the Philadelphia Eagles 20-17 in what many viewed as a Super Bowl rematch at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.

This marked the first time in Patrick Mahomes’ career that he has lost the first two games of a season. It’s kind of surprising, right? Especially considering Mahomes was on a three-game winning streak just before this, which included the recent Super Bowl loss to the Eagles.

While the Chiefs’ record is not what they were hoping for, the Eagles, on the other hand, are enjoying a solid 2-0 start thanks in part to a robust defensive performance on the road.

Rookie defensive back Andrew Mukuba had a standout game, recording six tackles and his first career interception. The Chiefs found themselves struggling early, and Mahomes faced a crucial second-and-goal from the Eagles’ six-yard line in the fourth quarter.

In a familiar play aimed at Travis Kelce near the goal line, Mahomes threw a pass that Kelce couldn’t quite secure, leading to an interception. Mukuba caught the ball and returned it 41 yards, gaining significant ground for Philadelphia.

The Eagles made quick work of the ensuing drive, covering 59 yards, culminating in a quarterback sneak from Jalen Hurts that pushed their lead to 20-10.

That cushion ended up being critical. Mahomes responded with a 49-yard touchdown pass to Taycan Thornton, trimming the Eagles’ lead to just three. However, after that, Philadelphia recovered the onside kick, with AJ Brown securing the ball to set up the Eagles’ final drive.

Saquon Barkley had a strong performance, rushing 22 times for 88 yards and finding the end zone, helping to run down the clock. Hurts ended the game with 22 completions on 30 attempts for 101 yards, while the Eagles’ defense shone bright.

Mahomes completed 29 passes for 187 yards with two touchdowns and added a rushing score, leading the Chiefs. But the game wasn’t quite the offensive showcase fans remembered from their Super Bowl matchup—it was a more subdued affair, yet, once again, the Eagles showcased their strength as a formidable team.

Next up for the Chiefs is a trip to MetLife Stadium to face the New York Giants.
