Mahomes Discusses Recovery from Knee Injury
Patrick Mahomes shared on Thursday that his doctors are taking a cautious approach with his rehabilitation as he works to recover from a knee injury that ended his season. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is hopeful about his timeline for returning to play.
Mahomes mentioned that his rehab has been progressing well. He’s met all the required checkpoints set by the medical team and is gradually regaining both strength and mobility. “So, it’s going well. I’ve been doing everything I can here in Kansas City,” he stated, adding that his assistant athletic trainer, Julie Freimeier, has been instrumental in pushing him. The quarterback acknowledged a tendency to want to push himself further, but the medical team is there to keep him in check.
Looking ahead, Mahomes expressed a goal of being ready for Week 1. He noted that medical experts have indicated this could be possible, although predicting the timeline is tricky. “I want to come in healthy and give my team the best chance to win,” he said. Mahomes is also eager for the opportunity to participate in OTAs and training camp, emphasizing his excitement about returning to the field.
This past season, Mahomes threw for 3,587 yards and completed 22 touchdown passes across 14 games. However, the year was somewhat atypical for the Chiefs.
Reflecting on the challenges faced during the 2025 season, he pointed to various mistakes, including crucial interceptions in the red zone that affected their performance. “We had too many errors. I think that’s part of what led to our inconsistency,” he remarked. He believes that the entire team needs improvement, starting with himself, and is motivated to come back strong for the next season.
The Chiefs concluded their season with a disappointing record of 6 wins and 11 losses, marking their first time missing the playoffs since 2014.
