Broncos’ Monday Night Football Debacle
So much for the Denver Broncos changing the narrative in the AFC West. In their first Monday Night Football game of the 2026 season, they faced a complete disaster, suffering a 31-10 defeat against the Kansas City Chiefs at the raucous Arrowhead Stadium.
Fans were eager to see Patrick Mahomes back in action after his serious knee injury that kept him out for almost a year. He looked sharp, but the real star was Kansas City’s prized offseason acquisition. Fresh from being named MVP of Super Bowl LX, running back Kenneth Walker truly stole the show. Walker racked up 191 total yards (173 rushing, 18 receiving) and two touchdowns, outpacing the entire Denver offense by himself.
On Denver’s first drive, things took a turn when rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane intercepted Bo Nix, quickly giving the Chiefs momentum. Mahomes wasted no time and capitalized with a 15-yard touchdown run.
After that, Walker dominated the field. Early in the second half, with a fourth-and-1 at the Kansas City 40-yard line, Andy Reid made the bold choice to keep the offense on the field. Walker took the handoff, found a gap, and sprinted 60 yards to score, becoming the first Chiefs running back to surpass 140 rushing yards and a touchdown in a single game since Kareem Hunt back in 2017.
Meanwhile, Denver’s offense was an utter mess. Davis Webb’s debut as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator was far from successful; they couldn’t even come close to matching Walker’s yardage.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton couldn’t hide his frustration watching his new offensive coordinator struggle on the sidelines.
Outside of a brief first-quarter touchdown pass from Nix to Evan Engram that tied the game at 7-7, Denver went completely cold, punting four consecutive times before the halftime buzzer.
The team’s troubles escalated in the third quarter. Trailing 21-7, they received good fortune when safety Brandon Jones intercepted Mahomes, setting them up on the Kansas City 5-yard line. Yet instead of scoring, they stumbled. A penalty pushed them back 10 yards, and then Nix fumbled a snap, leading to just a field goal from that promising position.
Later, Nix fumbled again in a dangerous spot, which Chris Jones seized upon to set up yet another touchdown pass from Mahomes to Walker, sealing the game’s fate for Denver.
Add into the mix that Travis Kelce had a notable night, catching a remarkable 59-yard pass that helped him surpass Jason Witten for second place in all-time receiving yards for tight ends. He’s now only behind Tony Gonzalez.
Kelce ultimately led the Chiefs with 71 receiving yards. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift was seen enjoying the game, seemingly unfazed by the Broncos’ struggles.
In short, the AFC West remains firmly in the hands of the Chiefs, and Denver appears no closer to claiming the title any time soon.
