Chiefs trim roster and cut ties with Kadarius Toney after roller-coaster tenure

2021 first-round draft pick Kadarius Toney will not be in a Kansas City Chiefs uniform when the NFL regular season begins next month.

The back-to-back Super Bowl champions cut their roster to 53 players before Tuesday's deadline and waived the wide receiver, NFL Network reported.

Toney had an up-and-down tenure with the Chiefs and entered the preseason as a player on the roster line in consideration for 2023. He appeared in 13 games last season and finished with 169 yards receiving and just one touchdown.

Teams had to cut their training camp rosters down to 53 on Tuesday from a maximum of 90. Toney is one of hundreds of players who can return to the practice squad. Under NFL rules, a practice squad can have a maximum of 17 players, including the spots allocated to the International Player Development Program.

Toney was limited in both of his first two seasons by injuries before being dealt to the Chiefs after his second season with the New York Giants. The 25-year-old never quite displayed his dynamic playmaking skills consistently, but he did thrive when it mattered.

In the space of three minutes in the fourth quarter of Kansas City's 38-35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2023 Super Bowl, Toney delivered two monumental plays: First, he caught a 5-yard touchdown pass to give the Chiefs a 28-27 lead, then he completed a 65-yard punt return to the Eagles' 5-yard line for another touchdown.

But Toney couldn't capitalize on that success, struggling last season and missing games from Week 15 through the playoffs, including when the Chiefs finished off a back-to-back series against the San Francisco 49ers.

The Chiefs acquired veteran wide receiver Marquis “Hollywood” Brown and drafted Xavier Worthy in the first round along with Rushe Rice, along with Skye Moore, Mecole Hardman and Justin Watson.

Other NFL teams now have a chance to acquire Toney on waivers. If a team acquires him, it will be paying the full value of the final year of his rookie contract. The Chiefs declined his fifth-year option earlier this year.

The Chiefs recently brought back Super Bowl-winning wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, signing him to a one-year contract.
