The future of the Red Kingdom is taking shape.
On Wednesday, the Chiefs unveiled designs for their upcoming stadium in Kansas, set to debut in the 2031 NFL season.
Designed by MANICA, the venue will feature a fully enclosed dome with translucent ethylene tetrafluoroethylene panels. The new structure aims to honor Arrowhead Stadium, featuring a similar seating layout, according to a team statement.
Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt expressed excitement over the announcement, saying, “Today we are thrilled to give our first glimpse of our new home at Chiefs Kingdom.” He continued, “From the start, we aimed to enhance the game day experience for all fans, and this new stadium will achieve just that.”
“It’s magnificent,” he added. “It honors the rich history of this franchise while boldly paving the way for the Chiefs’ future.”
Hunt mentioned that the stadium will have a capacity of 70,000 fans and is designed to amplify crowd noise.
Kansas lawmakers have approved using sales tax and revenue, with bonds being issued to finance up to 70% of the stadium’s construction costs. The Chiefs are relocating their NFL franchise across the state line from Missouri to Kansas, though a final decision on the stadium’s location has yet to be made.
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has indicated that the stadium will be built in Wyandotte County, mentioning the team’s enthusiasm for a stadium in Kansas City, Kansas.
The construction is projected to cost $3 billion and will include over 20,000 parking spaces.
The design has garnered interest from beyond Kansas; it’s been noted that it bears some resemblance to the Saddledome, home to the NHL’s Flames.
The Chiefs have called Arrowhead Stadium home since 1972.
A post from the stadium’s official social media account joined in the conversation regarding the design on Wednesday night, stating, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”
