Tragic Drowning of 5-Year-Old in Georgia
A 5-year-old boy lost his life in Georgia after apparently wandering into a lake near the family’s vacation rental. This unfortunate event took place near a home on Stonecrest Circle in Hiawassee, according to local authorities.
According to police, the child had been missing for about ten minutes before the family discovered he had gone into the lake. They were visiting from Cumming, Georgia.
When deputies arrived on the scene, they found that the child had just been rescued from the water. “The deputies immediately began CPR, with assistance from firefighters who also arrived promptly,” a representative from the Towns County Sheriff’s Office reported. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, the child was pronounced dead later that afternoon at Chatuge Regional Hospital.
The identity of the child has not been released. Towns County Coroner Tamera Cooper noted that, tragically, the child “fell into the lake and couldn’t pull himself out.” Cooper added that all emergency personnel made incredible efforts to save the child, but, sadly, it was too late.
Reports indicate that the drowning was classified as accidental. Lake Chatuge, where the incident occurred, is known for its stunning beauty and offers various recreational activities like boating, fishing, and swimming. It features a 132-mile coastline with ample opportunities for enjoying nature, whether through peaceful picnics or lively camping trips.
The Georgia Tourism website describes the lake as a place of “nearly unprecedented scenic beauty in the mountains of southern Appalachia.” Visitors can access numerous public boat ramps and designated swimming areas, making it a popular destination.
