Florida Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest and Rescue
A routine traffic stop in Florida turned dramatic when a convicted sex offender was arrested, and a missing child was rescued. The events unfolded on the morning of December 31st in Flagler County.
Deputies stopped a white Ford F-150 after receiving a tip about suspicious behavior. The driver, 60-year-old Darnell Hairston, was traveling with two minors. It soon became apparent that one of the boys, an 11-year-old, had been reported missing from St. Johns County just days earlier.
As deputies secured the child in a patrol car, body camera footage captured Hairston suddenly trying to flee, struggling with deputies in the process. According to authorities, he attempted to grab a deputy’s firearm before being subdued and taken into custody.
Hairston faces several serious charges, including resisting a police officer with violence, attempting to disarm an officer, kidnapping, and child abuse. After his arrest, more charges were added.
While deputies focused on Hairston, a second boy, 15-year-old Junior Bishop, allegedly jumped into the truck and sped away. Dashcam footage showed him dodging traffic and nearly colliding with an officer on the road.
The chase became increasingly reckless as Bishop swerved into oncoming traffic, eventually crashing into a deputy’s patrol car before both vehicles ended up in a wooded area, with Bishop’s vehicle overturning.
Bishop was subsequently charged with aggravated fleeing, assault on a police officer, reckless driving, and other offenses. During the chase, a deputy suffered minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital.
According to records, Hairston is a registered sex offender who had been released from prison in 2009 after serving time for prior offenses. He has a lengthy criminal history, including previous arrests for serious charges like assault and child-related offenses.
Following the incident, the 11-year-old victim reported that Hairston had lured him to a campsite, where he had endured significant trauma, including being restrained and threatened. Detectives later recovered evidence at the campsite that supported the boy’s account.
Detectives have issued an arrest warrant for Hairston, citing charges of kidnapping, aggravated child abuse, and others. Meanwhile, Bishop might face additional charges as the investigation continues.
Sheriff Rick Staley emphasized the case’s complexity and expressed relief that the child was rescued. He also questioned why a repeat offender had been released so soon after serving time, highlighting concerns about public safety.
