The Sound of Music Reunion in Florence

A cherished reunion took place in Florence, Italy, as former child stars from “The Sound of Music” gathered together after decades. Kym Karath, known for her role as Gretl, shared moments from this special occasion on her social media, including a group photo captioned, “The Sounds of Music in Florence – Five Us!”

In the photo, Kym, now 66, was joined by her fellow cast members: 75-year-old Nicholas Hammond (who played Friedrich), 74-year-old Duane Chase (Kurt), 72-year-old Angela Cartwright (Brigitta), and 68-year-old Debbie Turner (Marta). However, the reunion was tinged with nostalgia as they remembered Heather Menzies Urich, who had played Louisa and passed away in 2017, and other beloved cast members, including Christopher Plummer, who died in 2021.

Karath expressed her joy over the gathering, saying, “It was a complete joy to celebrate together,” noting the beauty of the historic theatre district of Florence, where they met. She remarked on how strong friendships develop over the years, particularly among those who worked together as children.

The film, which premiered on March 2, 1965, tells the story of the real-life Von Trapp family who fled Austria during the Nazi regime. Over the years, the enduring appeal of the movie continues to resonate with audiences for its themes of love and family.

Interestingly, many cast members stayed connected and even met with descendants of the Von Trapp family during their Italian trip. Karath hinted at exciting projects ahead, including a documentary that is currently in the works, which she believes will highlight their unique stories.

Reflecting on her time filming in Salzburg, Karath said, “One of the best things about that film for me was being a family.” She fondly recalled her connections with her co-stars, especially noting her admiration for Julie Andrews, who played Maria. “I loved her the moment I met her,” Karath shared, highlighting the warmth and talent of the legendary actress.

As the group continues to reminisce about their past, Karath’s memories underscore the lasting impact of their time together both on and off the screen. It’s clear their shared experiences have forged a bond that remains strong, even decades later.
