Shocking new video has been released showing the chilling moment a Kentucky sheriff allegedly pointed a gun at a judge's head and shot him dead.
Newly released surveillance footage shows Letcher County Sheriff Sean Stein and District Judge Kevin Mullins having a heated exchange in the chamber, before the deputy pulls out a gun. , aimed at the attorney general's head.
The footage shows Mullins, who was sitting behind a desk, raising his hands in fear and trying to turn away before Steins brutally fires eight shots at him.
The first footage of the brutal killing was played by prosecutors during a preliminary hearing Tuesday.
The video showed Mullins hiding under a desk while Stines opened fire. The disturbing footage then showed the sheriff approaching the judge under his desk and firing two shots at close range as Mullins left the courtroom where he had worked for 15 years.
Kentucky Detective Clayton Stamper testified that the deputy surrendered immediately after the shooting and asked police to “treat him fairly” when he was taken into custody.
Stamper then told police, “They're trying to kidnap my wife and child,” Stines told police.
Stines, 43, has been friends with Mullins, 54, for decades and had lunch together on Sept. 19, hours before he allegedly killed the judge inside the Letcher County Courthouse in Whitesburg. There have been times.
Mr. Stamper testified that one of the witnesses who attended the lunch saw Mr. Mullins ask Mr. Stines if he needed to meet privately, but the details were not disclosed. The Courier Journal reported.
Additionally, additional surveillance footage from inside the room, which has not been shown or released to the court, shows the sheriff using his and Mullins' cellphones to call their daughter multiple times shortly before the cold-blooded killing. He added that the situation had been captured.
Stamper and others confirmed that police found Stein's daughter's phone number on the judge's cell phone.
The case remains under investigation as police interview additional witnesses and examine both cell phones.
Defense attorney Jeremy Bartley declined to discuss a motive for the shooting, but authorities reportedly indicated the murder was being investigated as a possible sex scandal.
Authorities have not disclosed details about the sex scandal in question.
Stines announced Monday that he is resigning from his position as sheriff after Gov. Andy Beshear called for his resignation.
He has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and is being held in the Leslie County Jail.
The case was sent to a grand jury for indictment.
