China’s Tron 1 robot hurdles over obstacles like they’re nothing

Chinese company Limx Dynamics has announced the Tron 1, a multimodal viped robot that turns its head in the world of robots.

This compact powerhouse offers not just one, but three different modes of travel (walking, rolling, pivot) all in one refined package.

Whether navigating rough terrain or zipping across various surfaces, the Tron 1 is easily adaptable and demonstrates its impressive versatility and capabilities.

Adaptability at that core

Standing at a height of about 33 inches and weighing less than 44 pounds, Tron 1 It is a compact yet powerful robot designed for versatility. Its modular foot end system allows you to seamlessly switch between three different configurations. The point foot setup is perfect for precise leg control and agile movement, but the only configuration mimics humanoid walking for smoother, natural walking.

To speed up mobility across a variety of terrain, wheeled modes provide quick and efficient all-terrain travel.

Brain and brown

Don't be fooled by that size. Tron 1 packs punches into the processing department. Equipped with a 12th generation Intel Core I3 processor, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, the robot is ready to tackle complex tasks and algorithms. Its 48V actuator offers approximately 59 pound-feet of peak torque and can carry loads up to 22 pounds (up to 33 pounds). It's a serious muscle for a robot of that size.

Push the boundary

A recent demonstration shows the impressive agility of the Tron 1. You can jump over hurdles, climb irregular stairs, and easily navigate obstacles. It's excellent in many regions, but it has its limits. A maximum climbing angle of 15 degrees and an obstacle height limit of 15 cm actually maintains grounding. Still, it's pretty impressive to see it come back from the push.

Researcher's dream

The Tron 1 is more than just a flashy toy. It is a serious research tool. It supports Python development and compatibility with simulation platforms such as Nvidia Isaac and Mujoco to fill the gap between virtual and real-world experiments. Open SDKs and hardware interfaces allow researchers to push the boundaries between robot motion control and embodied intelligence. Whether you're a veteran researcher or just starting out, Tron 1 offers endless possibilities for exploration and innovation.
