A 17-year-old Chinese badminton player has died after collapsing on the court.
Zhang Zhijie collapsed forward on the court while playing against Japan’s Kawawa Makoto in Indonesia.
The video shows Zhijie appearing to have a seizure on the floor and then trying to get up before being treated by medical staff.

Zhijie later died in hospital.
Badminton Asia reported that Zhi Jie was taken away in an ambulance less than two minutes after collapsing.
“Badminton Asia, PBSI (Indonesian Badminton Association) and the organising committee are deeply saddened and extend their deepest condolences to Zhang’s parents, family and the China Badminton Association (CBA),” Badminton Asia said in a statement. It said in a statement“The badminton world has lost a talented player.”

“Examinations and treatment of the victims at both hospitals came to the same conclusion that the victims suffered sudden cardiac arrest,” Indonesian Badminton Federation spokesman Broto Happy told reporters at a news conference.

Yogyakarta’s badminton players and officials paid tribute to Zhang with a minute’s silence on the court on Monday morning before the quarterfinals.
Staff have been criticised on social media for an apparent lack of urgency, but the Chinese association said team leaders, coaches, doctors, interpreters and tournament medical staff responded swiftly after Zhang appeared to faint on court.

“We are deeply saddened by the death of Zhang Zhijie due to a sudden illness while competing in an international tournament,” the statement said. “We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone from all walks of life for the concern and support extended to Zhang Zhijie. We will do all we can to support Zhang Zhijie’s family.”
