Chip Carter Honors Habitat for Humanity Project

Chip Carter recently played a key role in the 39th Habitat for Humanity Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project, reflecting on his father’s efforts in bipartisan homebuilding.

Founded by the Carters in 1984, this week-long initiative has seen over 100,000 volunteers renovate and repair around 4,400 homes, according to Habitat for Humanity.

Chip noted his parents found building homes appealing because it was a non-political activity. “Mom and Dad dedicated a lot of time to Habitat, giving of themselves. I think one reason they liked it so much was that it was completely apolitical,” he shared. “You see, when you’re working next to someone with a hammer, you can’t tell if they’re a Democrat or a Republican. Politics stays out of it, and I think they loved having that break during the week.”

Chip highlighted that each project is meaningful, but the Carter Project stands out. “For us, every build is special, but this is our signature event. Not only do we build homes in Austin, but it’s also an opportunity to spotlight the pressing need for affordable housing both domestically and globally,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity. “It’s been a fulfilling week.”

Chip also emphasized that his father’s strong bipartisan spirit extended beyond home construction. “He had an unassuming nature,” Chip remarked. “He didn’t change much in terms of his principles. He acted on what he believed was right, without worry of political consequences.” Reflecting on his experiences, he mentioned, “By Friday, I’ll be a bit sore, but it’s worth it as I hand over keys to a new home.” He added, “Fridays are particularly rewarding. I genuinely feel accomplished, and it’s one of my favorite times of the year. I even brought my daughter and her husband along, hoping they’ll take over the tradition someday.”

Remembering the Carters

Rosalynn Carter passed away in 2023 at 96, while Jimmy Carter died last year at 100. An emotional funeral at the Washington National Cathedral in January 2025 brought together all five living former presidents.

During the service, many noticed the cheerful interactions between Barack Obama and Donald Trump, which sparked widespread meme-making and playful commentary on social media.

“While it was tough to lose my father, the funeral was quite beautiful. It felt like a unifying moment,” Chip reflected. “A lot of good words were shared about my parents. It’s a reminder of all the lives they’ve touched.”

In a separate initiative, the Scott brothers from “Property Brothers” participated in the recent Carter Work Project in Austin, joining over 1,000 volunteers to promote affordable housing. However, Habitat emphasized ongoing challenges, with a reported 3.8 million housing deficit across America.

Ultimately, the Carter Work Project transcends typical homebuilding, serving as a lasting testament to the Carters’ vision for a more compassionate America.
