Chip Roy: Democrat Shutdown Is 'Completely Political'

During a recent debate, Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), who is campaigning for Texas attorney general, asserted that the current government shutdown orchestrated by Democrats is primarily a political maneuver.

Roy commented on the ongoing situation, stating, “It’s become increasingly obvious that their strategy is entirely about politics. Many of us anticipated this over a year ago.”

He elaborated: “This isn’t the usual approach of allocating funds for defense and the border as part of a broader plan to create comprehensive legislation. You’ve probably noticed this too. It doesn’t follow the typical reconciliation bill path, which usually involves substantial spending on worthy initiatives,” acknowledging that they were aware Democrats would play such a game.

“Our goal was to at least set aside some resources and get back on track, allowing the president to pursue the agenda we aimed to achieve, because we anticipated they would do exactly this,” Roy added.

From his perspective, it seems evident that Democrats now support little more than their opposition to former President Donald Trump.

He mentioned, “They seem to be attempting to twist this into a healthcare battle. Their strategy is to leverage every opportunity to turn the upcoming elections into discussions about healthcare and anything else they can rally support around.”

Roy pointed out, “Now they’re calling it out due to our reforms in Medicaid, even as they continue to spend more on it. We made those reforms,” referring to new work requirements and efforts to combat fraud.

“They’re also dragging in the subsidy issue. I think we’ve made some progress in getting our point across: ‘If we need the COVID-19 subsidies to maintain our healthcare system—which is essentially holding Americans hostage—then you are responsible for that,’” he stated.

He emphasized that Republicans have plans they wish to discuss but condemned the tactic of leveraging a government shutdown to turn it into a political battle.

Roy continued, “As we approach Thanksgiving and the second round of checks are starting to hit people hard, Democrats are finding themselves in a difficult position, particularly amidst the lack of checks.” He predicted that if Democrats stand firm, Republicans may have to consider extending a resolution through 2026.

“Democrats will then need to return to the negotiating table to devise a strategy to secure some votes. We will address the healthcare issue concurrently, allowing them to claim they achieved something,” he concluded, noting the uncertain outcome as public reaction to missing their expected checks may evolve over time.
