Congressman Chip Roy Advocates for AI Regulation
Republican Congressman Chip Roy from Texas has expressed his support for implementing stricter guidelines on Artificial Intelligence (AI), advocating for a human-centered approach that diverges from the views of former President Donald Trump.
During his speech at the Pro-Human Assembly, a conference focused on AI organized by the Future of Life Institute, Roy emphasized the need for discussions on how to create a society that prioritizes human values. He stated, “We have to sit in committees and bring people in to have discussions about how we’re going to structure our lives and build a human-first environment.”
He further elaborated, asserting, “We, the people, have to decide how we want to structure our lives.”
Roy also acknowledged the potential benefits of AI, while highlighting the very real concerns it raises. He mentioned issues ranging from its impact on energy and water resources to job security and national safety. He remarked to the Daily Caller, “AI has enormous potential to improve our world, but the American people are right to be concerned about very real risks it poses if we are not careful.”
In contrast, Trump has stated that the U.S. is in a competitive race with China for AI leadership, viewing fears about the technology as exaggerated, once declaring, “AI taking over the World, destroying Humanity, and all other things bad, is a HOAX.”
Roy commented on Trump’s skepticism towards AI regulations, noting, “The President is also right to be skeptical when large technology companies suddenly come to Washington asking to be regulated. Government is rarely the answer to our problems. Innovation is.” He stressed the importance of collaboration between the government, industry, and citizens to address the challenges ahead, ensuring that technology supports humanity rather than vice versa.

Recently, numerous AI leaders have echoed Roy’s call for increased regulation, warning about the technology’s risks. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, wrote an essay titled “We Must Pace the Frontier,” advocating for the industry to slow down. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared his agreement with Amodei, while Elon Musk of SpaceXAI simply agreed, tweeting, “Dario is right.”
Public sentiment appears to align with Roy’s views. A Pew Research Center poll conducted in June revealed that half of U.S. adults find the expanding use of AI to be more alarming than promising. Furthermore, a recent survey by Johns Hopkins University indicated that over 70 percent of Americans support legal restrictions on AI, particularly in sectors like healthcare, law, and government operations.
