Chipper Jones slams 'toxic' umpire Doug Eddings

Chipper Jones has some strong opinions about MLB umpires.

Following a game between the Cubs and Tigers on Saturday that had several questionable calls, Jones voiced his frustrations regarding umpire Doug Eddings.

Despite the Cubs winning 6-1, multiple clear missed calls marred the game, including an incorrect third strike called on Pete Crow-Armstrong and a questionable ruling on Kyle Tucker’s check swing.

Jones took to social media to express his discontent, labeling Eddings as one of the worst umpires in baseball.

“It’s not just that he’s been one of the worst umpires for 20 years, but he’s also one of the most confrontational. That’s a toxic combination!” Jones remarked.

Jones, who played for the Braves from 1993 to 2012, has had his share of encounters with Eddings, who has been officiating in MLB since the late 1990s.

Eddings has been involved in 14 postseason series, including two World Series, and he officiated during last year’s matchup between the Yankees and Dodgers.

Jones appears to have little fondness for the recent game he referenced in his comments.

He’s not the only one who has noticed issues with Eddings. In June 2023, Eddings cautioned the Diamondbacks during a game for complaints coming from their dugout.

“Keep in mind, there aren’t many fans here. I can hear everything you’re saying,” Eddings told the team.

Jones is clearly looking for change, viewing Eddings’ calls as part of a recurring issue, not just an isolated incident.
