Christie Eyes 2028 Presidential Run
Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie appears to be contemplating another bid for the presidency in 2028, suggesting that the Republican Party might need to find a new direction.
Christie, who ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016 and 2024, had previously opposed Donald Trump’s candidacy during his second campaign. On a recent Tuesday, the 64-year-old expressed concerns about the GOP’s future, particularly if the party experiences significant defeats in the midterms.
“If we do a lot of losing six weeks from today, I wonder whether we are going to say, ‘okay we need to change this approach’ and change this wing of the party from being the dominant wing and having a different discussion within our party which could lead to a different conversation with the country,” he said.
Throughout his previous campaigns, Christie has consistently painted Trump as unfit for leadership. However, despite his efforts, he finished sixth in the 2016 New Hampshire primary and exited the 2024 race before any votes were cast, indicating that his message hasn’t resonated with voters as he had hoped.
“So am I looking at it?” he responded when asked about a potential third run. “Look, anybody who comes up here and has ever run for president and not won and told you they’re not looking at it again is lying. Once you go through the thought process of convincing yourself that you can be president and then the next step, that you should be president, that doesn’t leave your brain.”
He further elaborated, reflecting on the conversation he’d have with his wife, saying, “If I’m going to go back home to my wife and say, ‘I know you may not believe this, but third time is the charm,’ I better have a real theory, and what she has said to me is, ‘Chris, I want to see the path.’”
In parallel developments, former Vice President Kamala Harris, who also faced defeat to Trump in 2024, is reportedly mulling over a political comeback in 2028. Her recent appearances at major campaign events have stirred speculation, although there’s a split among key Democratic strategists regarding her chances of overcoming previous electoral challenges.
On the Republican front, the race for the 2028 nomination is already heating up. Vice President JD Vance has emerged as a leading figure, with discussions underway about his potential to advance the “America First” agenda. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio is seen as a significant contender in foreign policy, should he choose to enter the fray.
