Chris Christie on Robinson allegations: 'This was predictable'

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) said in an interview Sunday that CNN's recent bombshell report about North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, the Republican candidate for governor, was “predictable” given Robinson's past public comments.

“Mark Robinson has made a series of inconsistent and at times deeply offensive statements throughout his tenure in public office,” Christie, a former 2024 presidential candidate, said on ABC's “This Week.”

“And Donald Trump endorsed him and supported him,” Christie continued, “in fact, described Trump as better than Martin Luther King. A ton of Martin Luther King Jr., right? So this was to be expected.”

Christie said part of the problem is that former President Trump, his longtime ally turned rival, is picking the wrong candidates to run for the Republican nomination.

“That's the problem for us Republicans: As long as Donald Trump is our agent for recruiting candidates in battleground states, we're going to keep losing.”

“And Mark Robinson is not going to win this race. He's not going to win this race,” Christie said, noting that Robinson is trailing in the polls and “he's running against a very formidable candidate for attorney general, Josh Stein, by the way.”

“So the fact is, it's going to be a tough race no matter what. And the question for them now is, to what extent is that going to affect the top candidates?” Christie continued.

CNN published a shocking report about Robinson on Thursday, revealing that more than a decade ago he had made a wide range of inflammatory comments on a pornography message board, including calling himself a “black Nazi” and calling for the reinstatement of slavery.

The posts were made by an account with the username “minisoldr,” which CNN identified as belonging to Robinson based on the inclusion of his full name on the account, his use of that username on other sites, an email address Robinson had used elsewhere, and biographical details that matched his profile.

Robinson said he would continue his campaign despite concerns about the viability of his candidacy.Claimed in the videoShortly before the article was published, Robinson posted on social platform X that the Democratic candidate Josh Stein's campaign had leaked the information to CNN, but Robinson claimed the details of the information were false.

The revelation is just the latest in a series of controversies surrounding Robinson's candidacy, with Republican candidate Robinson gaining attention for a series of inflammatory comments he made against various groups.

He has openly opposed abortion, calling it “murder” and “genocide,” but softened his stance during the campaign and voiced support for the state's current 12-week law.Depicting homosexualityHe also called “transgender people” “filth,” called Muslims “invaders” and made derogatory remarks about Jews and black Democratic voters.

Robinson is a critic of the Civil Rights Movement, claiming that “so many freedoms were lost” during that period.
