Criticism of Democrats Over LA Riots
On Monday, political contributor Chris Cillizza criticized Democrats for their reactions to the riots that erupted in Los Angeles, California, following immigration enforcement actions by ICE. The riots, which began on Friday, saw rioters targeting federal immigration officials and causing damage to public property.
Cillizza remarked that instead of blaming President Trump or his administration, Democrats should denounce the violence itself. In a statement released by the Department of Homeland Security, the seriousness of the situation was highlighted. Cillizza expressed his frustration on his YouTube channel, suggesting that Democrats like California Governor Gavin Newsom are mishandling the situation.
“Democrats seem to be playing with fire here, and it’s politically unwise,” Cillizza noted, criticizing Newsom for personalizing the issue rather than addressing the broader implications of the unrest. He mentioned Newsom’s comments that redirected blame onto Tom Homan, suggesting that it was misplaced. “This isn’t about him. It just complicates things unnecessarily,” Cillizza added.
He also took issue with remarks from California Representative Maxine Waters regarding the riots. Waters questioned the purpose of law enforcement’s firearms in the context of protests, a statement Cillizza felt was disconnected from the violent scenes playing out on television. “It seems to me like she’s missing the point,” he said, emphasizing the need for law enforcement to act decisively against the violence.
Cillizza argued that Democrats need to take a clear stance against violence, stating, “A unified message condemning violence would resonate better with the public. They should advocate for peaceful protests rather than be drawn into the debate about Trump’s immigration policies.”
In a related note, CNN’s chief data analyst Harry Enten mentioned that Trump’s approval ratings regarding immigration have surged by 20 points since June 2017. The chaos in Los Angeles included mobs setting fires, throwing Molotov cocktails, and vandalizing property, all while chanting anti-ICE slogans. In response, Trump announced the deployment of 2,000 National Guard soldiers to the city, inciting criticism from both Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.
Former Democratic strategist Dan Trenine suggested that Democrats are losing their moral compass in light of their responses to the riots, implying that they are becoming too lenient towards the violent actions taking place.
