Chris Coons Avoids Direct Answer on Supporting Kamala Harris in 2028

Sen. Chris Coons Dodges Question on Kamala Harris’s Future

During an interview on Wednesday, Delaware Senator Chris Coons, a Democrat, sidestepped a question posed by Fox News host Martha McCallum. She asked if he would distance himself from former Vice President Kamala Harris if he chooses to run for president again in 2028.

Harris made an announcement on Wednesday that has been in the spotlight, especially after speculation about her political future. She clarified that she won’t be seeking the governorship of California, but it remains uncertain whether she will aim for the governor’s office in 2028 or attempt another presidential run.

Coons remarked, “Martha, 2028 is quite a ways off, and right now we need to concentrate on the issues facing Congress.” He pointed out the ongoing challenges, stating, “Our President, Donald Trump, is diligently working to shut down the government, and we, as budget custodians, are trying to keep it open and meet the needs of Americans.”

He added, “And that’s different from a president who seeks to take healthcare from millions. That’s what we need to tackle now. 2028 is just a few years down the line.”

In her statement, Harris expressed enthusiasm for supporting Democrats across the country and indicated that she would share her future plans in the coming months.

Before Harris’s announcement, some California House Democrats shared their reservations. They told CNN that the idea of a former vice president running for the governorship wasn’t particularly appealing.

One comment noted, “There’s no strong support for her candidacy. I actually think it might hurt her chances to take on Republicans and secure the 4-5 seats we need in 2024.”

Another remarked, “She’s bringing her baggage with her.”

Political analyst Mark Halperin speculated during a recent meeting that Harris might step back from politics altogether. He suggested that she may not pursue the governorship of California and that a presidential run would also be complicated, implying she might exit the political arena.

Harris faced a significant defeat in the 2020 presidential election, losing all seven swing states and the popular vote to Trump. During the Democratic primary that year, she garnered just 844 votes and had no delegates.
