Chris Cuomo, Tucker Carlson debate Jan. 6, Affirmative Action

NewsNation host Chris Cuomo and conservative commentator Tucker Carlson discuss the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol and the merits of affirmative action during the second half of a conversation aired on the station Tuesday. Discussed.

“Affirmative action is completely immoral,” Carlson said at one point during the debate. “Don’t punish people because of how they were born.”

“But the state did it,” Cuomo countered.

“Of course, it ended in 1965,” Carlson said, to which Cuomo responded, “No, it didn’t.”

Earlier in the debate, Cuomo called the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump an “insurrection” and said, “That’s bad enough.”

In a previously released video interview, Mr. Cuomo told Mr. Carlson that he had “handpicked” footage of the Capitol riot provided to him by then-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

“Ashli Babbitt, she put that police officer, along with 10 others, at risk for her life for no reason, good or bad, where she was. That’s why she was shot,” Cuomo said.

Carlson countered, “Can police shoot people without warning?”

“In a situation where the police are using force to arrest you, they cannot shoot you without warning,” Cuomo responded. “There’s a mob crowding this guy, and he’s trying to hold down the glass door to keep the deputies from being hanged or whatever, and they’re trying to break through, and he’s fearing for his life. We have determined that this is a threat.” Otherwise. ”

The conversation between the two cable news figures aired over two nights on Mr. Cuomo’s prime-time show, and the first episode Monday night sent ratings for his weeknight show soaring.

In part of the conversation aired Monday, Carlson told Cuomo that he was “glad he was fired” from Fox News, which took him off the air last April, and that he was “glad to be fired” by Russian President Vladimir Putin. “We have no intention of moving the ball at all,” said opposition coach Alexei Navalny, explaining why he did not pursue the ball.

Since being fired from Fox, Carlson has started a media company and launched a new show on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

CNN fired Cuomo in December 2021 and later joined NewsNation, a cable news channel owned by Nexstar Media Group, which also owns The Hill.

As Cuomo ended his show Wednesday, the expert said the purpose of broadcasting Carlson’s interview was “not to make it a love-it-or-hate-it thing.”

“The important thing is that we don’t have to say or demonize anyone we disagree with,” he says. “It’s not moving. We can’t get to where we want to be. Unless all we really want is to destroy this place and tear it apart. That’s what I mean. All of that.”
