Canadian Free Speech Advocate Fined in Australia
A Canadian free speech advocate has recently faced a fine from Australian authorities, which seemed to draw some support from the US State Department. Chris Elston, also known as “Billboard Chris” due to his distinctive choice of wearing a sandwich board, expressed his thoughts on the issue, saying, “It’s phenomenal. The Trump administration has been incredible about this issue.”
Elston was fined $806 for “interfering with public movements” after displaying a sign that read, “children cannot agree to adolescent blockers.” He clarified that he had only engaged in peaceful conversations with bystanders before being subjected to a police order to move.
This incident is part of a broader legal challenge that Elston announced in April concerning Australia’s eSafety committee. It followed the government reacting to tweets about stories involving transgender activists on the Australian board. Elston criticized this move, stating, “It’s an overuse of very enthusiastic authority. We don’t choose officials to decide what we can say.”
Moreover, he has been under scrutiny after being censored in light of a tweet from the State Department that underscored government censorship and the influence of tech companies targeting individuals.
Elston emphasized, “Freedom of Expression must be protected – online and offline,” expressing concern over the implications of such actions. He pointed out instances where freedom of speech has been under threat, referencing actions taken by the EU and Turkey against social media platforms for their content moderation policies.
Lois Miller from Alliance Defending Freedom International is actively supporting Elston. She noted, “Everyone has the right to live and speak their truth, and Chris is a great example of that.” Miller added that they are standing alongside the Australian Human Rights Law Alliance to uphold freedom of speech, while also highlighting similar issues occurring in the UK, where individuals have faced arrest for expressing their opinions.
