Chris Froome Back on His Bike After Serious Crash
Four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome is back cycling after a severe crash that led to him being airlifted to a hospital in Toulon, France. The incident occurred during a training session in August. Froome suffered significant injuries, including a pneumothorax, five broken ribs, and a fractured lumbar vertebra, raising concerns about the future of his cycling career.
Despite the challenges, Froome recently shared on social media that he has returned to riding. He mentioned, “It’s been a tough road coming back from my recent crash, but it feels great to finally get my legs rolling here and be on the road again.” He added, “Every setback teaches you something…this setback reminded me to slow down, heal, and enjoy the simple things in life.”
Froome’s first victory at the Tour de France was in 2013, and after a setback in 2014, he went on to win three consecutive titles from 2015 to 2017. This achievement made him the first rider since Lance Armstrong—before his titles were stripped—to defend the title successfully.
His last major win was the 2018 Giro d’Italia, and he also claimed the Vuelta in Spain twice, in 2011 and 2017. Froome’s first title came in 2013, and then he secured a hat-trick of wins from 2015 to 2017.
Since a serious fall during the Critérium du Dauphiné in 2019, which resulted in broken bones, Froome has struggled to regain his previous form. That fall broke his right femur, elbow, and ribs—it was a tough period for him.
Currently, Froome is under contract with Israel Premier Tech, but with his contract set to expire soon, the implications of this latest accident cast uncertainty over his career moving forward.
