Chris Hemsworth Finds Peace in the Australian Outback
For Chris Hemsworth, the Australian actor known for his role as Thor, living at home feels like a constant getaway.
At 42, Hemsworth reflected on his significant choice to leave the glitz of Hollywood for the quieter life in the Australian countryside. He found his time in Los Angeles less than enjoyable, prompting him to relocate his family to a large farm in his native Australia. “It was around the time my sons were born, but we were in Los Angeles and it just wasn’t working for us. We weren’t really filming anything there anyway,” he noted during an episode of a podcast.
He elaborated, “When you come back home, it’s hard to escape the paparazzi and all that comes with that lifestyle.”
Hemsworth shares three children with his wife, Elsa Pataky. They tied the knot in 2010, just three months after their relationship became public.
After moving back to Australia, they settled on a spacious farm where their kids can roam freely. “You know, when you finish work and want a vacation? It feels like a vacation for me. Coming home is just… incredible. We’ve got horses, motorcycles, and opportunities for surfing,” he explained.
Growing up just outside Melbourne, Hemsworth and his brothers enjoyed endless adventures, which fueled his passion for acting. “We lived in a spot about 20 minutes from Melbourne; our nearest neighbor was quite a walk away,” he recalled. “Surrounded by scrubland and rainforest, we had to create our own fun. There’s something so enchanting about escaping into another world.”
Interestingly, before he made it in acting, Hemsworth’s first job involved repairing breast pumps for an Australian electronics company. He explained, “We would fix them if a little motor belt broke. I had to clean everything off, too—grabbed a toothbrush and some spray. That was my start.”
Hemsworth’s acting journey began in the early 2000s with minor roles in Australian TV. His breakout moment came with the soap opera “Home and Away.” However, it was his role in “Cabin in the Woods”—filmed in 2009 but released later—that propelled him to stardom as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Among other honors, Hemsworth will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2024. In his acceptance speech, he made sure to express gratitude to his wife. “I owe so much to my beautiful wife, who has journeyed with me throughout my career, always encouraging me. It amazes me she put her dreams on hold while supporting mine, and I’ll forever be in her debt.”
“Honestly, nothing in my life would carry the same weight without you. I love you,” he concluded.
