Appearing on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Thursday, longtime MSNBC personality Chris Matthews said he expects a “comeback” from President Joe Biden, who is facing intense scrutiny after his lackluster performance in a debate with former President Donald Trump.
Matthews suggested Biden would be fighting from behind and would likely assume the underdog role he has become accustomed to throughout his political career.
He also predicted that the so-called elites who turned their backs on him “will pay the price.”
“He’s a good politician,” Matthews said. “And he’s been re-elected every time since then in Delaware, with a pretty big majority. And in terms of his life, he lost his wife and his daughter, and he found Jill. Now, is anybody going to listen to Jill or George Clooney? I’m telling you, this is personal. He had the elites, and he’s really true about the elites. He’s totally right about the elites. Look at President Obama. He served eight years faithfully, and Obama supported Hillary Clinton for president and didn’t support him. But I’ve heard Obama never even invited him upstairs. He had every reason to be upset, and he didn’t. He puts up with the elites.”
“But at this point, he’s getting the poor,” he added. “He’s getting the minorities, he’s getting the Hispanics. He’s going to put the workforce in. He’s going to maintain the Democratic base that he’s going to need in November. And I’ll say this: He’s going to make a comeback in October, and people are going to end up rooting for him. And with all this elite-esque attacks on him, people are going to pay the price for that. But in the end, they’re going to vote for him. So, I think Biden is going to be the little guy. He’s going to be the Democrat in this race, the true Democrat. And he’s going to win people over to him in October. It’s going to be amazing. He’s not going to give up. He’s not going to give up. That’s my view. And I think that’s the most important thing that we’re going to resolve here by tonight.”
