Molly Kerim’s Departure from ESPN: Insights and Speculations

Chris “Mad Dog” Russo has shared his thoughts on Molly Kerim’s early exit from ESPN, suggesting that she opted to leave before the end of her contract to avoid the stigma of being a “lame duck” with a possible “demotion.”

During a recent episode of the SI Media Podcast, Russo expressed his surprise over the abruptness of Kerim’s departure from “First Take.” He speculated that her decision might stem from feelings of embarrassment about staying on a popular show while her status was in question.

“I think she caused it…she might have felt embarrassed,” Russo reflected. “I didn’t discuss the specifics of her decision, but I’m sure she didn’t want to be seen as a lame duck on the show. That probably played a role.” Russo, a regular on “First Take,” pointed out that he was taken aback when Stephen A. Smith called him the night before with the news about Kerim leaving.

He mentioned that he had limited interactions with Kerim before this but noted her long tenure at the network. “They likely wanted to try something new, perhaps move her around a bit,” he said.

Russo clarified that ratings weren’t an issue but rather the nature of television where changes happen frequently. He speculated that while ESPN wanted to retain Kerim, she may not have been interested in other roles—believing she would be stepping down if “First Take” was no longer in the picture.

Describing her relationship with Smith, Russo highlighted their dynamic as akin to “brother and sister.” He continued, “I was in the dark about all of this; I was shocked when I found out. It felt like a swift removal from promotions once she left.” Kerim had been a staple on “First Take” for a decade and part of ESPN since 2005.

She shared her decision to leave via her Instagram Story, revealing that news about her departure came out earlier than she had planned.

A few hours later, reports surfaced that she had turned down a new contract offer and intended to leave the network at the year’s end. In a separate interview, ESPN’s president of content, Burke Magnus, indicated that they had already reached a mutual agreement regarding Kerim’s exit prior to her public announcement.

Magnus noted that while discussions were ongoing, Kerim expressed a desire to explore opportunities outside of ESPN, leading to differing views on her future.

ESPN is now in the process of auditioning new hosts for “First Take,” taking roughly 30 to 45 days to evaluate candidates. So far, individuals like Amina Smith, MJ Acosta Ruiz, Peter Schrager, and Shay Cornett have stepped in to host.

In a related note, former NFL player Marcellus Wiley, who previously co-hosted “SportsNation” with Kerim, expressed discomfort that Smith, who holds a significant position at ESPN, did not advocate for her during this transition.
