Christa Pike Regains Consciousness After Botched Execution Attempts
Christa Pike has reportedly regained consciousness and is now able to speak following two unsuccessful lethal injection attempts that left her in critical condition.
Pike’s legal team confirmed her recovery in a statement released on Tuesday after she had been placed on a ventilator.
“Her recovery is medically unprecedented. Her prognosis remains unclear but, at a minimum, we expect a long recovery,” her attorneys stated.
They expressed gratitude toward the first responders and the medical staff at the hospital who treated Pike with compassion and provided excellent care. They also thanked the numerous individuals from around the globe who sent messages of support and prayers for her well-being.
At 50 years old, Christa Pike received crucial medical intervention after surviving two lethal doses of pentobarbital. Last week, her attorneys confirmed that medical professionals struggled for about an hour to establish an IV line, using at least seven needles in the process.
“One of which appeared to be bent when it was pulled from her arm,” her attorney Randy Spivey noted last week. “The state continues its efforts despite the complications we had warned about in court months earlier.”
Spivey had to urge medical personnel to initiate life-saving measures after it became apparent that Pike was still breathing despite the injections.
“I did not get any information or confirmation that an ambulance was on its way until 8:50,” he said. “I had no idea when and if medical professionals began to assist Christa.”
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has ordered an independent review and postponed the remaining execution scheduled for this year, marking the second delay during his tenure.
Pike’s legal team stated on Tuesday that they will continue to request Governor Lee to change her sentence to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
In an emergency motion filed last week in Davidson County Chancery Court, Pike’s attorneys claimed that she could be heard crying, whimpering, and breathing heavily during the failed execution, with both arms described as swollen, burned, and blistered.
Christa Pike was convicted and sentenced to death for her involvement in the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. At just 18, she became the youngest woman to receive a death sentence in the U.S. at that time.
