Christa Pike in Serious Condition Following Failed Lethal Injections

Christa Pike Critical After Botched Execution

Christa Pike is currently in critical condition after surviving two lethal doses of pentobarbital as part of her 1995 murder sentence for Colleen Slemmer.

Pike’s legal team has confirmed that she was rushed to the hospital, where medical staff are doing everything possible to save her following what they call a failed execution.

Attorney Randy Spivey stated, “Christa is alive right now.” He mentioned that there’s no clear update on her prognosis yet, but emphasized that she is receiving essential medical care.

According to Spivey, the medical team spent about an hour trying to start an IV line in Pike, using at least seven needles.

“One of which seemed bent when it was taken out of her arm,” Spivey noted. He indicated that the state continued its attempts despite the complications they had warned about in court months prior.

Spivey started insisting that medical staff initiate life-saving measures after observing that Pike was still breathing despite receiving the lethal injections.

“I didn’t receive any confirmation that an ambulance was on its way until 8:50,” he recounted. “I was completely in the dark about when or if help was actually coming for Christa.”

Governor Bill Lee of Tennessee has ordered an independent investigation and has delayed the only remaining execution scheduled for this year—marking the second time he’s taken such action during his administration.

This incident marks the second failed execution overseen by Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada.

Strada was appointed by Lee in January 2023, previously working in Arizona, where he managed two executions that faced similar vein access issues.

In a preceding year, 2022, Lee postponed executions after the Tennessee Department of Correction failed to test pentobarbital for bacterial endotoxins prior to Oscar Franklin Smith’s scheduled execution. This led him to task Strada with establishing a new lethal injection protocol.

“This is a process that has been used over 100 times in this country without this kind of outcome,” Lee remarked on Thursday. “It’s important for us to understand why this particular incident diverged from the norm. This protocol was approved by the attorney general’s office and has been applied successfully many times across the nation. There shouldn’t have been any reason for it to fail, yet it did.”

Christa Pike was convicted and sentenced to death for her involvement in the murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer and, at 18, became the youngest woman on death row in the U.S. at that time.
