Christa Pike's problematic lethal injection could halt executions in Tennessee.

Tennessee’s recent effort to execute Christa Pike, a 30-year death row inmate, ended in failure on Wednesday, throwing her execution into uncertainty. This incident could prompt the state to reconsider its approach to capital punishment, as suggested by Phil Keith, the former Knoxville police chief who oversaw her arrest for the murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer back in 1995.

Keith expressed skepticism about the future of executions in Tennessee, saying, “I’ll be surprised if there are any executions in Tennessee in the near term, if again, ever.” He shared these thoughts during an interview, reflecting on how Pike managed to grab national attention ahead of her scheduled execution on September 30, due to a last-minute appeal and requests for alternative execution methods, including a team of all-female executioners. But instead, the focus shifted to the failures of the lethal injection attempts.

Pike’s botched execution attempts have drawn criticism, overshadowing discussions about the victim, Colleen. Keith remarked, “Why don’t we talk about Colleen’s potential future, about her life, you know, do a deep dive on her family, talk about what she was trying to do?” He described their backgrounds, noting that while Pike seemed to lean towards a life of crime, Slemmer was a dedicated teen trying to improve her circumstances and stay out of trouble.

“She was a bright young woman,” Keith recalled, highlighting Slemmer’s interests in computers and her efforts to better herself despite her troubled past. “She was clearly an innocent party in this; she was not involved in any of the violence that went on at Job Corps.” He emphasized that Slemmer had supportive figures in her life, including her mother, who wanted the best for her, but challenges were always present.

Pike, along with her boyfriend and another accomplice, tragically lured Slemmer to a park where they inflicted horrifying violence upon her. Keith characterized Pike as the mastermind behind the attack, stressing that she displayed a complete lack of remorse during police interrogations. He recounted how she even kept a part of Slemmer’s fractured skull as a trophy, showcasing it to classmates, while her accomplice carved pentagrams into Slemmer’s skin.

In reflecting upon the situation, Keith didn’t hold back his disdain for Pike, calling her “pure evil.” It’s a grim tale that serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of crime and the complexities surrounding the issues of punishment and justice in the state.
