Christian McCaffrey’s Australian Barber Experience
During the San Francisco 49ers’ recent trip to Australia, Christian McCaffrey discovered that language can be amusingly nuanced in unexpected ways.
McCaffrey, 30, shared a funny moment he had while getting his haircut. “I was getting a haircut a few days ago and one of the barbers looks at me and says, ‘Looks cracker,’” he recounted in a postgame press conference.
“I said, ‘Sorry, what did you say?’” He was met with laughter from teammates George Kittle and Deebo Samuel, who were present during the press conference. McCaffrey, who is used to the term “cracker” having negative connotations in the U.S., was taken aback to learn that it was meant as a compliment in Australia.
“I didn’t know what it meant; I guess that means it looks good. But that was funny,” he added.
In an interesting twist, he noted that in Australia, “cracker” is actually slang for something excellent. “He said it again, and I was like, ‘Dude, I hear that every Sunday.’ It was great; we had a good moment. I enjoy all the slang,” McCaffrey said, smiling.
The 49ers had plenty of reasons to celebrate after their convincing 27-7 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night. McCaffrey had a solid performance, running for 68 yards on 10 carries and catching five passes for an additional 20 yards.
Meanwhile, rookie running back Kaelon Black shared the workload with McCaffrey, likely aimed at keeping the seasoned player in top form, finishing with 14 carries for 65 yards.
Following their win and a fun lesson in Australian expressions, McCaffrey and the 49ers are set to return to the U.S. for their next challenge against the Miami Dolphins in Week 2.
