Christina Applegate was hospitalized over the weekend while on a trip in Europe due to severe pain she found hard to endure.
Reflecting on her experience, she commented, “Things are messy, but I’m fine.” The 53-year-old actress initially thought her discomfort might be related to appendicitis.
Throughout her fight with multiple sclerosis, Applegate has been hospitalized over 30 times. She shared that her trip to Europe, intended to visit family, was marred by persistent unease. “I tried my best, but I wasn’t feeling good at all,” she noted.
Once back in Los Angeles, Applegate insisted on undergoing every possible test, wanting to understand her symptoms. The next day, she described a new, intense pain that struck her back, saying, “I was screaming and ordered an emergency CT scan at 2 am, which revealed a kidney infection.” This led to her lengthy stay in the hospital.
Her friend, Sigler, highlighted the seriousness of the situation, noting that it could have been worse, and praised Applegate for her quick instinct to seek medical help.
Describing the pain as possibly the worst she had ever experienced, Applegate likened her abdomen’s cramping to a ‘fight club’ — overwhelming and hard to bear. “I’m just going to be here,” she stated resignedly before her admission, though she tried to maintain a sense of humor. Yet, she admitted at times, tears came easily.
In a candid moment, she expressed how vulnerable she can feel, saying, “I sometimes fall into the nurse’s arms like a freaky, like I’m crying.” Earlier this year, Applegate talked about how her diagnosis had led to numerous hospitalizations over the last three years. “I honestly can’t believe I’ve been hospitalized more than 30 times since being diagnosed,” she lamented.
The challenges of living with MS are significant and sometimes perplexing. “It affects how our organs function. I’ve noticed little things, like if I have to poop…,” she elaborated. She acknowledged that while her neurologist has been supportive, she feels there may be connections between her symptoms that aren’t fully understood.
Applegate publicly shared her MS diagnosis in 2021, saying, “It’s been a strange journey, but I’ve tried to be supportive of others in similar situations.” Despite the difficulties, she remains open about her experiences, emphasizing that the journey continues.
