Christina Applegate Reveals Misdiagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis
Christina Applegate, known for her role in “Married … with Children,” has opened up about a significant medical misdiagnosis. On her podcast “MeSsy,” she shared that she had been treated for multiple sclerosis (MS) for over five years but was recently informed that she does not have the condition.
During her podcast episode, she recounted a hospital visit where a doctor told her, “Congratulations, you don’t have MS.” However, this news did not bring her joy, as she felt overwhelmed and—strangely—not happy, unlike those around her who celebrated. It was a moment of disbelief, and she noted, “You don’t get misdiagnosed and then all of a sudden I’m better.”
Applegate expressed her confusion and emotional turmoil following this revelation. She described it as a “mindfuck” and shared that her situation has worsened, leaving her in a “state of shock.” Now, she finds herself “back at square one,” grappling with ongoing symptoms and no clear answers regarding her health.
She mentioned that her doctors will investigate the reasons behind these issues since 2021, seeking clarity on her condition. The impact of the misdiagnosis has been profound, affecting her mental health and overall life. “I’ve gone through a great depression because of it,” she revealed.
Applegate lamented the losses she endured due to her health challenges, including her job, and reflected on the drastic change in her lifestyle. “I still have to use wheelchairs when I go to the doctor’s office,” she shared, expressing her ongoing struggles. Despite the good news of not having MS, she felt no relief; “Nothing magical happened when she said, ‘You don’t have MS.’ Nothing magical happened.”
As she spoke about her experiences, she admitted feeling like she had let people down, especially since many had looked to her and Jamie-Lynn Sigler as advocates for MS. “I had a reason as to why my day sucked every day. And now I don’t have a reason,” she said, conveying a sense of unease and confusion over her ongoing health issues.
In the second part of the podcast, Dr. Marwa Kaisey from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center discussed how misdiagnoses like Applegate’s can occur. She noted that there is no single test for MS and that many individuals diagnosed with the disease over the years may not have it, with some even undergoing unnecessary treatment.
